Improper coating material selection may lead to premature coating failure, costly re-work and potential loss of structure and/or structural integrity due to inadequate protection in extreme service environments.
Coating materials selection is the process by which the proper coating material is selected and paired with the target in service conditions or environment in which the coating will be applied.
Considerations are as follows:
Condition of the existing coating system, remove/replace vs over-coat
Expectation of the material to be installed
In-service environment exposure: Heat/freeze thaw, moisture/immersion, turbidity, UV, impact, abrasion, soil, etc...
Structural design accommodation, (Flex/Movement & accessibility for application)
Ability to maintain the coating system post-application (Maintenance Coating)
